My father's memoir on Thursday

Just yesterday, I was entering a post about Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and about fatherly love, today, I received a reminder from my mum that this Thursday, 25 August 2005, is my father's 3rd year memoir.

There will a simple ceremony, according to the Chinese customs and traditions, serves as a reminder and memories of those who have passed by...

I could not help but feel a bit down for that day to come by...

In fact, I will be away for the next three days. Today, I'm away from home. However, I managed to make arrangements so that I can be home on Thursday morning to join in the ceremony. Thank goodness! :)

I have regretted not doing, or doing things that I shouldn't have, and for this simple ceremony, I DO NOT WANT to regret missing it. Both my sisters will be back home to join in the ceremony.

My other brothers are too far away... but I think dad will understand them...

Another thing... the 3rd year after someone passed away is a very significant ceremony for Chinese. It also signifies the end of the 'observing filiality period', which was stated as a three years period. The ideas stemmed from Confucian teaching that we should honour our predecessors and ancestors for three years after their passing.

What is this 'observing filiality period'?

In the olden days, this means that children of the deceased would shift to stay in the burial ground, or next to the burial sites of their deceased parent. That's why the olden burial sites can be as large as a house... so that the deceased children can stay inside it during the filiality period.

Though noble, this practice is no longer a norm among Chinese. Observation of the filiality period is done un-officially, where one keeps reminding oneself about the deceased. Even this, sadly, is seldom observed, let alone practicing it...

Frankly, it is not easy to do it... even for myself, though I thought of dad sometimes. I somehow miss him... :(

In the modern time, I only came to know that there's only one person who have done this - staying by his father's burial site for three years, observing the tradition of filiality period in the most traditional manner. That person, a monk by the name of Venerable Xuan Hua, who resides in United States in his later years. Venerable has also passed away himself... but during his lifetime, he had a very, very large followers, due to, I believe, his unsurpassed virtues...

Though I found this quite an impossible practice to be observed in the modern time, I somehow admire the spirit behind this ceremony. And I certainly admire the insights and wisdom shown by our great teacher - Kung Fuzi (Confucian). And one day, I will definitely write something about him and his teachings!

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

After 2 weeks of continuous work, I decided to take a break yesterday...

I took my girlfriend out for lunch, then to movie, shopping, dinner - the whole day out, and with my mind out of work or e-books.

The movie we watched - Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

Initially I was wondering what Tim Burton was trying to tell us. Usually, in the movies - there's certain message to be shared.

Well, I didn't quite get it when Willy Wonka was trying hard to say even the word "Father" that someone have to say "Parents" for him... Until again and again he potrayed that difficulty I began to catch that.

Then, the constant flashbacks on his childhood, and how his father stopped him from eating chocolates and candies, it is confirmed that the movie was trying to tell us about fatherly love.

What's more - a small boy like Charlie would give up the riches of the world for being with his family...

I came back later, and looked at my father's picture...

He's no longer with us... :(

I did not tell him how much I love him. I never take the time to really spend time with him. I argued with him. I ignored him. I hardly talked to him. And I regretted all that!

My mum is still with me. I'm not going to repeat that mistake again.

I talk to my mum. I spend time with her. I took her out for breakfast, for lunch and for dinner. I spend more time at home so that she will not feel lonely. And that is why I opted for internet business, so that I can stay at home and accompany her. Otherwise she will be alone and lonely.

For Chinese, filiality is very important. I don't consider myself filial, but I would have to try my best to give mum the best she deserves.

And for the movie, if you are spending too much time on your career, business, studies or whatever that is not related to family - I would recommend you to watch it. It is funny and entertaining, but the message is very touching - family is our one most important thing in life.

"Without a family, we have no roots. Without a root, we cannot stand against the wind."

The Impermenance of Life...

Last night, as planned, I spent a great time with my girlfriend. We went for pizza and shared many, many things.

I shared with her my joy of receiving positive feedback from readers of my latest books. She shared with my about her work, and their planning to go to the capital on 16-18 September to celebrate one of their directors' birthday, etc...

We went home, and her housemate, TT was around. She looked tired and depressed...

TT has just broken up with her boyfriend 3 months ago, and all this while she was hoping that they can re-concile. She kept stressing that he was a good man, treated her very nice, and now he's with someone else and treated her coldly. Yet, TT still loves her man.

But that causes a lot of pain and suffering on her.

"How could such a good man change???"

"TT, people change, things change, events change, and everything changes. That's the impermenance of life!" I shared with her.

I was concerned about her well-being. Though I don't really understand the pain that she has gone through, or how hard she try to let it go, we (my girlfriend and I) hope we can do something to reduce her pain...

All we can do is to ask her to take good care of herself. She's strong. We know she's strong. But, she needs time and support.

People change...

I-Ching advocates the ideas of change...

Buddhism stresses on impermenance...

Modern management gurus emphasize on change management...

In this dynamic environment, nothing stays constant. It all depends on how we perceive them and face them. As for TT, she just have to let it go! She had been trying to contact the guy, trying to meet up with him again, hoping that he will come back to her... and the the sad part was - the guy tried to avoid her with excuses, even as a normal 'friend'!

Sigh! Losing something is part an parcel of getting something! We get it, someday we will lose it!

That's how impermenance things can be! :(

She was tensed and depressed, and has been losing sleep. I asked my girlfriend to do 'Guasha' on her - scrapping her with a small board made from buffalo's horn with some medicine, on certain acu-points of her body, which is known to induce sleep. Hopefully she will get some good rest and clear her mind to see things as it is.

Later I will teach her how to do simple breathing to release herself, and some simple prayers on getting stronger and over with her woes.

Well, life is impermenance... and oh, by the way... my girlfriend dropped her mobile phone last night on the way to the pizza house, and she lost it! :(

Sigh! That's how life is!

OK, but then, things have to go on. Life goes on. My writing goes on - will start off my second book today!
